An Interview with Carolyn

How long have you been a Realtor? Since 1997.

Do you have any special designations? I am a Licensed Real Estate Broker, a Certified  Buyer's Representative and a Senior Real Estate Specialist.

What was your inspiration for joining the real estate profession? I was in retail management for 12 years prior to getting my real estate license.  One of the most compelling reasons I had for the career change was to have more control over my schedule and destiny.  I love to work with people and have never been one to want to sit behind a desk for 40 hours.  In real estate I get to be out and about, meet new people all the time and help families with the purchase and sale of their homes.

Does it get any better than that? Since you entered the profession, what are the greatest changes you've seen in it? When I entered the business we were in a 'flat market', so I've been in the business through this entire economic cycle. The greatest challenge is to change your strategy as the market changes.  The definition of crazy is to do the same thing over and over again and expect a different result.  There are some tried and true basics in real estate sales, but if something that used to work doesn't anymore, it's time to be innovative. . .

What was your most memorable transaction? That is such a hard question!  The way I see it, closing day is one of the most important days in someone's life.  It is all about them, and it gives me such satisfaction and it is such an honor to be able to be a part of it with someone.  They are all very memorable.

What advice would you give to a seller to help them effectively market their home?  Homes in this market are still moving, but to be the one to sell you have to be prepared to present your home in the very best manner you are able.  You also have to be very competitive with your price.  If you aren't willing or able to make repairs or attend to cosmetics, you will have to adjust your price accordingly to attract the buyers.

In your opinion, what information is most useful for potential buyers who are looking for a home? First of all, know your financing options and be comfortable with the payments.  The finance industry is changing daily so consult with someone experienced and reputable. Buyers also need an informed real estate agent.  There are so many distressed properties that appear to be wonderful bargains, and some are.  But some properties may present challenges to purchasing, or potential resale later down the road.  Buyers should have guidance in gathering the essential information so they can make wise purchasing decisions.

Why Hire a Professional Real Estate Agent?

A qualified, competent Realtor will help you navigate the myriad of decisions that arise when buying and selling a home. An agent provides value to the homeowner in many ways:

  • Prepares marketing and advertising material and absorbs cost
  • Adds experience and expertise in all aspects of the sales process including marketing, financing, negotiations and more.
  • Handles all showings and follow up with feedback
  • Brings a network of known, trusted real estate professionals. If your agent doesn't have the answer, he or she likely knows someone who does.
  • Always has your interests in mind so you always have someone on your side.
  • Can handle and advise on all price and contract negotiations.
  • Provides you with all the possible options and opportunities without holding back.
  • Gives an unbiased, realistic view of your home and your options.
  • Has the knowledge to help you ask the right questions.
  • Being a third party, potential buyers are more likely to tell your agent the truth about your home, even if it is unflattering. This objective viewpoint will help you make the necessary changes to get your home sold.
  • Your time is valuable. A Realtor allows you to spend your time how you want.
